HTSD Approves Revised Health and Safety Plan Requiring Universal K-12 Masking Indoors

The Hampton Township School District Board of School Directors approved a revised Health and Safety Plan on August 24, 2021, for the start of the 2021-22 school year by a 7-1 vote.

Under the revised plan, students, staff, and visitors at the K-12 level will be required to participate in mask-wearing when indoors.

“I recognize the passion of parents and community members regarding the health and safety of their children,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael Loughead. “However, as Superintendent, I trust the guidance provided by public health experts, specifically the Allegheny County Health Department and the CDC, in our decision to require universal masking.”

At the High School and Middle School, should Allegheny County be determined to be in the MODERATE or LOW transmission status — per CDC community transmission levels — the District will consult with the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) and reevaluate this policy.

At the Elementary Schools, should Allegheny County be determined to be in LOW transmission status, the District will consult with the ACHD and reevaluate this policy.

“I believe indoor mask-wearing for K-12 schools is a prudent recommendation that we need to take at this time,” Dr. Loughead said. “Additionally, we will monitor changes in Allegheny County, in addition to updated CDC guidance, and remain flexible in making adjustments as necessary regarding masking.”

Further, mask breaks will be afforded to students as was previously provided during universal masking.

“We are confident that universal mask-wearing will reduce the number of students required to quarantine, which will help us focus on providing uninterrupted in-person instruction,” Dr. Loughead said.
